We were at the Sheraton in June 2006. We were originally scheduled for April, but FEMA still had a contract on the hotel so we moved our dates. While some may think that I gave the hotel a pass because of the horrendous event that they had been through, this would be an incorrect assumption.

Obviously, my perception is affected by Katrina and the aftermath. And, I admit that I was incredibily impressed by how well the staff held together in rescheduling and working to move our event. However, I was also impressed on a purly professional level. Staff was always available and anticipated needs. They also responded extremely well to requests from both staff and attendees. Especially requests and questions regarding concerns over safety in the area, health concerns, etc in the aftermath of Katrina.

Our conference is typically about 1600 people. in June 2006 we were down to about 1100. Most of the space worked incredibly well. We used their ballroom for exhibits rather than the newly designed exhibit space, which we used for breakout sessions instead. I think we would have been happier for session if we could have used the ballroom. But, we needed ceiling hight for a few of our regular exhibitors.

So while the space could have been better, it was our choice to use it the way we did, and, frankly, it is not often that I have that kind of flexibility in hotel meeting space.

I attended a meeting at this facility last month. While someone else made the arrangements in advance, she could not attend the meeting last minute, and I was the on-site contact and had received copies of the BEOs. We were a very small meeting, with very few needs. There were at least two much larger meetings going on around us in the hotel. Our morning break was set, as requested.

Shortly after noon, when our working lunch should have arrived, I went into the hall to see if they were waiting for us to break to roll it in. I asked someone who appeared to be a banquet captain about our lunch. It was quite obvious from his expression he didn't know what I was talking about, and even said there wasn't a BEO for a lunch for our room. I retrieved my copy of the BEO from the meeting room, which he had found by the time I returned. They did recover relatively quickly, and had a deli buffet lunch (though, not what we had ordered) brought into us with 30 minutes.

Prior to the meeting, we had arranged with the catering manager that I would pay the group charges by check at the end of the meeting. However, I could not find anyone who could give me the bill when the meeting ended. After searching and calling for five minutes, I realized I needed to leave for the airport to catch my flight home. The charges were put on the credit card on file, which belonged to the person who had originally planned the event, and she had to be reimbursed.
