Was Rome really like this? Friday, 01 August 2008 Written by JoanEisenstodt - Top 10 Reviewer Even the airwalls seemed pretty good at blocking sound. There were, however, too many surprises: 1) None of the meeting rooms in which I facilitated sessions (or in those in which I attended sessions) had built-in sound. In talking with colleagues, I understand that it is more costly to build in the sound than to bring in portable sound systems. However, it means that there is additional cost to the meeting sponsor and that as a facilitator, there was very little ability to move around the room w/o causing feedback from the sound system. 2) Convention services (always my favorite people in a facility) didn't seem to do a great job. There was much confusion about room sets and change-overs between sessions. Of course it was a schlep to get to the meeting space .. but I guess that's a given in Las Vegas. I fortunately had a scooter, w/o which I would have had great difficulty esp. since I had to take my laptop and other session materials w/ me. About the rest: 1) Check in on Monday early afternoon was a nightmare. The line never got shorter. My wait in line was 30 minutes. More, the front desk is adjacent to the casino and the tobacco smoke filled the lobby making standing in line an even worse experience. No one from the property was 'working the line' to say "We're glad you're here" [maybe they weren't..tho' they should have been given Las Vegas's falling occupancy], or "Have some water - we know the heat is excessive." And once to a front desk agent, my reservation was all wrong and he was not happy about fixing it! 2) My room (in the Palace Towers) was large and comfortable and the a/c kept the room comfortable cool. (I did request a portable fan bec. I need air moving bec. of a med, condition - and there was not one to be had.) It was clean and seemingly well kept. I kept the DND on my door so I'd not have housekeeping services but was surprised that no one put a card under the door or called to ensure I really meant the DND. 3) THAT said, my towels were ragged and my sheets had holes .. not what I'd expect from any hotel and certainly not from an upgraded accommodation. Oh and the bed? It was fair but certainly not great. 4) Room service was ok but OY! was it pricey! It's funny: in NYC, I have gotten used to excessive prices for room service. I do not expect that in Las Vegas. The other good thing about room service was breakfast 24 hours/day. Another not-so-good were the totally inappropriate comments made to me by the room service waiter on one of my two times getting room service. And oddly, they do not have brewed iced tea from room service tho' the outlets had it. 5) Ate at only one restaurant in the hotel - the buffet - which was good tho' odd for a few reasons - some of which I've seen in other Vegas properties: a) Same menu every day and night. b) LOTS of seating but always lines - they do not have enough staff to bring beverages and thus hold off on seating people. The lack of staff means that drinks are not often refreshed nor is silverware replaced or even extra silverware provided when you want something clean. If I were going into this knowing the group well and the property, I'd maybe consider this because the space is pretty good. I'd want to look carefully at all the issues and see their proposals before booking. Duration:
