When I first moved to DC, I listened to some industry colleagues talk about padding their expense accounts because, well, they thought they deserved the extra money.

Today, I listen to planners who, believing they are not paid enough and that they work harder than their salaries indicate, rationalize taking (airline, hotel) points so that they can have some time off using the points earned as a result of the work they are paid to do.< [...]

Doing the right thing

It's on my mind - the idea that many people choose to not do the right thing. They may know what the 'right thing' is and then, because of fear, they choose to either do nothing or do something that they know isn't the best way to go.

What does this have to do with meetings and our industry?

There is a wonderful web site for books and posters for children and their parents, guardians and teachers from which I often purchase books for children in my life. I also love their character building series - useful with people of all ages.

This series asks the question "what do you stand for" and proceeds to guide parents and teachers and adult friends of children to help the children learn values. I dare say it helps the adults reenforce values.

the hotel sales person who was asked what incentives the hotel offered to the customer (third party - already commissionable at 10%) for booking?

Or the one about the sales person at a trade show who, when told that the planner did no meetings in that area but did vacation there, offered a weekend's stay for the planner and her spouse?
